Most complex organisms have a “central nervous system” that commands and controls the corpus.   So do complex organizations.

Can you imagine a moon shot without Houston Control?  How about the U.S.S. Enterprise (the Star Trek version) without a flight deck?

Health Systems are arguably the most complex organizations devised by mankind, yet have functioned without a central command since their inception.

Next month in Boston, hospital executives from around the country will learn how Operational Command Centers are improving patient access and revenue by revolutionizing patient care delivery.

Executives from Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL and Carilion Clinic, Roanoke, VA, will share their success stories during a day-long exploration of the command center concept, presented by Healthcare Informatics.

The command center concept has evolved as a result of patient flow solutions that deliver real-time feedback regarding virtually every care support need in a hospital.

For example, Carilion Clinic’s Transfer & Communications Center (CTaC), looks like an air traffic control center.  In fact, the y direct their own three-helicopter, 50-ambulance fleet, and 6 hospitals – right from this single point of command.  This ‘Mission Control’ center manages all system throughput – patient transfers, bed management, patient transport, etc.

Rush’s year-over-year patient transfer volume jumped 19% after it converted its largely manual transfer operation to an automated command center concept.  Prior to, Rush relied on two nurses and clipboards to record open beds.  Leadership selected TeleTracking because it provided the most comprehensive, transparent, operational management system.

Both organizations will discuss their process and results at this one day executive exchange on Thursday, November 12th at the Nine Zero Hotel in Boston.
