Joint Commission Webinar on Impact of Hospital Worker Fatigue

“Worker Fatigue:  Implications for Patient and Staff Safety,” the second of a three-part webinar series TeleTracking is offering with The Joint Commission, will be held on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 11 am (ET).

So, what is fatigue?  Fatigue is “the body’s response to sleep loss or prolonged physical or mental exertion.” (ACOEM, 2012)  When it comes to healthcare, a fatigued staff is a serious problem that directly impacts safety for patient and staff.

Overtime, staffing shortages, shift length and personal factors are just some of the factors that contribute to worker fatigue.  The margin of error increases causing medication errors, charting errors, and transcription.  The effects it can have on the staff though are alarming, including injuries, decreased physical and emotional well-being, and decreased personal safety.

Healthcare workers may be the nation’s most stressed employees according to an online articlepublished by The Advisory Board Company.  Citing a survey by CareerBuilder, the article said more than half of healthcare workers believe their workloads increased over the past year and 25% plan to switch jobs in the coming year.
