The COVID-19 virus is creating significant challengesand many frank discussionsabout the capacity of our healthcare system given that many are already regularly operating at or above 90% capacity.

Carilion COVID19“We're running at 95-98% capacity—which could be problematic for patients with time-sensitive medical issues. When our team centralized and simplified—and sent the right patient to the right facility—the result was a 40% increase in patient transfers to secondary campuses.”

Melanie Morris, Sr. Director, Transfer & Communications Center

At TeleTracking, we are committed to being collaborative partners and helping health systems both improve efficiency and shine the light on excess capacity to ensure that no patient waits for the care they need. This has been our mission for close to three decades—and why we know that a Health System Command Center is no longer optional in a world of pandemics, mass casualty events, and the ever-growing number of weather-related crises. A Health System Command Center provides the transparency and visibility that is critical at times like this. And we are at the forefront, providing an integrated technology platform to manage the path of patients, and world-class clinical expertise, to 1,000 hospitals throughout the U.S., Canada and UK.

As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, hospitals have several options to enhance capacity to make room for more patients. The below points are also key features of TeleTracking’s integrated technology platform and have been for decades.

• Make the discharge process faster and less complicated so patients can leave the hospital as soon as it is safe, freeing up beds for incoming patients.

• Add an isolation precaution such as COVID-19 to flag infected, or potentially infected patients.

• Exercise precision patient placement so that COVID-19 patients are placed in the right bed the first time, protecting both healthcare workers and other patients from exposure.

• Block beds up to one-hour post-discharge of a COVID-19 patient (prior to Environmental Services entering the room) per CDC recommendations.

• If plans for alternative care sites need to be implemented, the technology to track and monitor these patients can be extended.

Quite simply, Health System Command Centers are functioning like NASA, making it possible to manage operations in real-time, and giving doctors and nurses visibility into the status and movement of every patient, bed and room. These centers also provide a level of transparency that will help health systems meet the CDC’s key goals of reducing mortality and morbidity, minimizing disease transmission, protecting healthcare personnel and preserving healthcare system functioning for the U.S. healthcare system in response to this outbreak.

Our health systems will be stressed and under tremendous pressure over the next several weeks requiring rapid adaptation to meet the needs of the expected surge of patients. Health professionals are accustomed to being prepared, and everyone is already thinking ahead of how they will endure the crisis, to ensure that their patients do not wait for the care they need, when they need it most.
