In the wake of the Aurora, CO theater shootings, the University of Colorado Hospitalwas able to save the lives of all 22 victims who were treated there.
That amazing feat helped UCH gain national recognition for the years of planning and training that went into the response.
UCH hospital manager Paige Patterson, RN, BSN, will tell the story of how the hospital’s advanced preparation helped to save those lives when she presents “The Role of Automation in Mass Casualty Events” at HIMSS ’14 in Orlando, FL this February 25th.
Paige will share her personal story of how years of mass casualty simulations drills, combined with outstanding staff response and automated capacity management technology, brought order to chaos immediately after the event and in the days ahead.
Twelve people were fatally shot in a span of six minutes and 58 others were wounded that night in a dark theater which was screening the “Dark Knight Rises.” Minutes later, victims began arriving at UCH despite its official diversion status. Adding to the confusion, other patients not associated with the shooting continued to walk into the ED.
